Greetings to all the readers of this post, I know this blog is pretty much got abandoned since 2012, I need 2 years to finally post another post in this blog of mine. This first post in 2014 is due to an assignment that has been given to me by Mr. Tri Djoko Wahjono, Ir, M.Sc as the first assignment in Programming Language Concepts. So, I required to answer 10 questions from Sebesta's Book named Concepts of Programming Language.
Here is the answer of the review questions:
1. Why is it useful for a programmer to have some
background in language design, even though he or she may never actually design
a programming language?
It is important for a programmer to have
the background in language design whether the programmer someday will make a
new programming language or not, because they need to know how the programming
language works in order to help them choosing a suitable language, learning new
language easier, better use of the language they have known, and advancement of
computing skill.
2. How can knowledge of programming language
characteristics benefit the whole computing community?
The knowledge of programming language
characteristics gives a lot of benefits for the one who learn about them,
because if you know the characteristic of each languages that you use then you
can analyze and choose which language that suitable and more efficient for you
to use.
3. What
programming language has dominated scientific computing over the past 50 years?
The programming language, which is
dominating the scientific computing over these past 50 years, is FORTRAN.
4. What
programming language has dominated business applications over the past 50
years?
The programming language, which is
dominating the business application over these past 50 years, is COBOL.
5. What
programming language has dominated artificial intelligence over the past 50
years?
The programming language, which is
dominating the artificial intelligence over these past 50 years, is LISP.
Here is the answer of the problem set questions:
1. Do you believe our capacity for abstract thought
is influenced by our language skills? Support your opinion.
Yes, I do believe so because programming
language skills require you to think more logically and coherently (abstract
thought), so if you have a bad programming language skills, it can be concluded
that your capacity of abstract thought is bad.
2. What are some features of specific programming
languages you know whose rationales are a mystery to you?
I think nearly all the thing that connected
to programming language is still a big mystery to me because I just learned
about C language recently. I also feel amazed that this language is the
foundation of our society in this era.
3. What arguments can you make for the idea of a
single language for all programming domains?
I thought it is better to use only a single
language for all programming domains because it will make programmer life
easier since they won’t need to learn a lot of different languages just to make
a software, and they also can save their time to learn new language every time
the new programming domain is out.
4. What arguments can you make against the idea of
a single language for all programming domains?
It is a bad idea to make only a single
language for all programming domains because the diversity of the programming
language make us free to choose which programming language that we think easier
and comfortable to use.
5. Name and explain another criterion by which
languages can be judged (in addition to those discussed in this chapter).
Efficiency is another criterion that can be a
parameter to determine how good a programming language is. It means that a
programming language that can produce a result with only a few line of code is
more efficient than other programming language that requires hundreds line of
codes to produce the same result.

Jelang peluncurannya yang direncanakan pada akhir bulan Oktober 2012, bocoran
harga Microsoft Surface RT akhirnya terkuak. Menurut bocoran dari Microsoft
Store yang dilansir The Verge, tablet yang didesain oleh Microsoft dengan layar
10,6 inci tersebut akan dijual dengan harga setara iPad terbaru, yaitu mulai harga
499 dolar untuk versi dasar dengan penyimpan 32GB, namun tanpa Touch Cover.
Jika Surface RT tersebut dilengkapi dengan docking maka harganya akan menjadi
599 dolar. Selain versi 32GB, Microsoft Surface RT juga disediakan dengan
model 64GB. Untuk model 64 GB, Microsoft membanderol Surface RT seharga
599 dolar jika tanpa Touch Cover dan menjadi 699 dolar jika memakai Touch Cover.
Sayangnya jika dibandingkan dengan iPad, Surface RT sepertinya kalah dalam hal
resolusi. Surface RT akan memakai layar HD, kemungkinan adalah 1366 x 768 piksel,
sementara iPad terbaru memiliki resolusi lebih besar yakni mencapai 2048 x 1536 piksel.
Apple iPad juga memiliki keunggulan dengan telah tersedianya ratusan ribu aplikasi
melalui App Store, sementara aplikasi untuk Microsoft Surface RT sampai saat ini
belum cukup banyak jumlahnya.
Microsoft Surface RT unggul karena adanya kickstand yang sudah terpasang built-in.
Selain itu Surface RT menggunakan casing magnesium dengan ketebalan hanya
9,3 milimeter dengan bobot 1,5 pound (0,68 kilogram). Asesoris Surface RT jika
dijual terpisah masing masing berharga 119 dolar untuk Touch Cover dan 129 dolar
untuk papan ketik fisik.
Microsoft dikabarkan menyiapkan 3-5 juta tablet Surface RT. Apakah tablet
ini akan laku dan bisa menyaingi iPad baru sebagai pemimpin pasar tablet di dunia
saat ini?

Microsoft mengumumkan layanan terbarunya bernama Xbox Music. Ini adalah sebuah layanan musik digital yang akan bersaing dengan iTunes milik Apple dan Cloud Player milik Amazon.
Layanan ini akan mulai tersedia untuk konsol game Xbox mulai besok. Selain itu, Xbox Music juga akan diperluas ke software komputer dan tablet berbasis Windows mulai 26 Oktober mendatang.
Microsoft sudah mengembangkan layanan entertainment selama beberapa tahun ini dengan Xbox. Ada lebih dari 67 juta unit yang sudah terjual sejak 2005. Sekitar 18 bulan kemudian, Microsoft menyadari bahwa 60% pengguna Xbox menghabiskan waktunya pada layanan entertainment ketimbang video game.
'Kami juga menyadari, sebagai perusahaan entertainment, musik perupakan hal yang penting di dalamnya dan sebagai bagian dari pengalaman para pengguna yang berbeda,' kata Jerry Johnson, General Manager Xbox Music.
Microsoft akan memberikan penawaran berupa layanan streaming musik gratis, namun dengan iklan. Ada juga fasilitas premium yang menyediakan layanan tanpa batas dan tanpa iklan, dengan biaya langganan $9,99.
Layanan ini juga termasuk download-to-own music store dengan lebih dari 30 juta lagu, sementara di iTunes hanya ada lebih dari 26 juta lagu. Xbox Music juga menghadrikan 70.000 video klip yang hanya tersedia melalui konsol Xbox.
Xbox Music juga memiliki fitur cloud-storage yang mirip dengan iTunes dan Cloud Player, dan juga radio seperti layanan streaming musik Pandora dan Spotify.
Xbox Music ini akan tersedia di 22 negara. Microsoft berharap layanan ini akan tersedia untuk perangkat iOS dan Android tahun depan.

Seorang analis dari Ovum belum lama ini mengungkapkan bahwa dirinya percaya bahwa
Windows Phone 8 bisa jadi akan menjadi 'pembunuh' BlackBerry. Kemungkinan ini
sangat terbuka mengingat Microsoft memang menargetkan pebisnis dengan tingkat
integrasi mendalam pada Windows 8, Office 2013 dan variannya, termasuk
Windows Phone dan membuat seluruh platform tersebut bisa bekerja sama dengan mulus.
Selain integrasi mendalam, ada juga informasi yang mengatakan adanya peningkatan
yang besar dalam hal keamanan termasuk software enkripsi yang tidak hanya
memproteksi sistem operasi namun juga berkas file yang ada di sebuah perangkat.
Ada juga fitur sandbox yang akan lebih memproteksi perangkat dari malware,
ditambah perbaikan dalam manajemen jarak jauh oleh departemen IT. Alasan lain
Microsoft menargetkan pasar pebisnis adalah karena sampai saat ini iOS dan
Android sukar digoyahkan dari pasar konsumen.
Menurut analis tersebut, untuk memenangkan pasar pebisnis, Microsoft harus membuat
pemasaran produknya dengan baik. Kampanye harus besar-besaran dan membutuhkan
dukungan dari operator seluler karena adanya pengalaman pengguna yang akan
benar-benar berbeda ketika beralih ke Windows Phone.

Well this could be a problem. Microsoft Game Studios upcoming blockbuster Xbox 360 exclusive game Halo 4 has been not only spotted in the wild, but fully leaked to certain websites. Postings appeared on Reddit and NeoGAF showing retail disc copies of Halo 4, as well as an image of the Xbox Dashboard showing Halo 4 ready to be played.
After some sleuthing around on popular sources for pirated games, we discovered that a full disc image of Halo 4 Disc 1 - the disc containing the single-player campaign - is available to download and burn to a dual-layer DVD, enabling you to play it on your Xbox 360 provided the DVD drive has received certain modifications. The image is approximately 8 GB, and the description states Disc 2 containing the multi-player portion of the game will be uploaded later. Update: Disc 2 is also now available.
Microsoft responded to The Examiner on the claims of a Halo 4 leak:
We have seen the reports of Halo 4 content being propped on the Web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation.
However, no law enforcement team will be able to stop the force of the internet now that the game has leaked, as it will surely spread like wildfire. To make matters worse this leak has occurred a full three weeks before its launch on November 6, so naturally spoilers are going to be available soon for the entire campaign which can't be accessed by legitimate paying customers.
It is common for Xbox 360 games to be leaked before their release, although a leak this far before is rare. Keep in mind, for those people attempting to pirate a copy of the leaked Halo 4, that playing leaked games before their release can result in your console being permanently banned from Xbox Live.

The rumor was Apple would send out invitations for its iPad mini launch two days ago, but nothing happened. Today, John Paczkowski from AllThingsD, citing unnamed sources inside Apple, tells us the event will actually take place on October 23rd, just three days before Microsoft unveils its own Surface tablet. AllthingsD has a strong record on predicting these types of events and Tracour pegs them with a 91% accuracy rating, so take this rumor with a bit for weight as it is likely accurate.
The iPad mini rumor keeps coming back every year, but this time it has finally got some strong backers, especially The Wall Street Journal who keep citing "people familiar with the matter". It was them that broke the story a few days ago that production of the new tablet had finally begun with Apple demanding 10 million tablets from its suppliers.
As far as we know the iPad mini - not the official name - will be sporting a 7.85 inch LCD display, with a resolution equal to that of the iPad 2: 1024x768, so no retina display. It will also come with Apple's new Lightning connector, and presumably it will be thinner than the current iPad.
The launch on October 23rd seems to be somewhat impromptu, with Apple trying to beat Microsoft to the punch. Microsoft will also be launching its own tablet, the Surface RT, on the 26th. Paczkowski speculates that having already had a major event this fall, Apple will refrain itself and host an invite-only, close to home, intimate launch for their new device.
We'll see how this turns out in the days ahead so be sure to stick around.
